Aya Huma in Victoria
Project Type
Conceptual Photographic Essay
Date
December 2024
The core of this story is the narrative of blending cultures.
Aya Huma, aka Diablo Huma, is a traditional symbol from Ecuador, celebrated during the Inti Raymi, or Fiesta del Sol (Festival of the Sun). This symbol embodies duality with its two faces—representing the good and the bad, the sky and the earth, and night and day. One face always looks toward the
sun, reminding us of balance and coexistence.
Through the perspective of the Diablo
Huma, I explore and portray the emotions of being
an outsider. The journey of starting over in a foreign place is challenging and isolating, but it is also rewarding and brings
moments of growth and discovery.
Over time, you find ways to adapt and assimilate by embracing the new culture. You find yourself exploring landmarks, tasting new foods, and immersing in traditions of new surroundings.
However, it is important to remember that the memories of where you came from will always be a source of strength and comfort and be part of who you are.
